Intent
At Howletch Lane Primary School, we believe that all children can achieve success in mathematics. We aim to develop confident, resilient and fluent mathematicians who are able to reason, solve problems and apply their mathematical understanding in a range of contexts. Our priority is to ensure that every pupil develops secure number sense, strong mathematical fluency and the confidence to explain and justify their thinking. We strive to close gaps quickly, support all learners to succeed and prepare pupils well for their next stage of education.
Implementation
Mathematics is taught daily and is underpinned by a consistent approach across the school. We place a strong emphasis on developing number sense from the earliest stages through the Early Years Number Sense Programme and continue this focus throughout school using the Number Sense approach, Number Facts Fluency Programme and Times Tables Fluency Programme.
Pupils begin each lesson with retrieval practice, revisiting previous learning, key knowledge and mathematical vocabulary. This supports long-term retention and helps pupils make connections between new and prior learning.
Teaching focuses on developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Teachers use questioning, observation, discussion and ongoing assessment to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching accordingly. Timely intervention, adaptive teaching and the use of appropriate scaffolds ensure that all pupils can access learning and make progress.
Impact
As a result of our approach, pupils develop strong number sense, secure mathematical fluency and rapid recall of key number facts. They are able to reason mathematically, explain and justify their thinking using appropriate vocabulary, and solve problems efficiently and accurately. Pupils demonstrate resilience when faced with challenge and are increasingly confident in their mathematical abilities. By the end of Year 6, children are well prepared for the next stage of their mathematical education.
In lessons, this is evident through pupils’ confidence in discussing mathematics, their ability to recall prior learning, the accuracy of their calculations, and the progress they make from their individual starting points.
How to support mathematics learning at home
Learning Platforms
To ensure children at Howletch Lane are fluent in mathematics, quick and accurate recall of facts is paramount. Each week, we expect pupils to rehearse these facts at home by accessing online maths programmes.
We have access to both NumBots and Times Tables Rock Stars which can be accessed via logins provided by the class teacher.
NumBots
NumBots is a self-paced educational platform with an interactive, robot immersed game. NumBots is all about every child achieving the ‘triple win’ of understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction, so that they move from counting to calculating.
Times Table Rock Stars
Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help pupils master the times tables. It is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times table practice. To be a Times Table Rock Star you need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12×12 in less than 3 seconds!
