Sports Premium Funding at Howletch Lane Primary School
At Howletch Lane Primary School, we are committed to promoting physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and the development of sporting skills for all our pupils. The Sports Premium is a government-funded grant specifically allocated to primary schools to enhance the quality of physical education (PE) and sport. This funding enables us to provide additional resources, specialist coaching, and extracurricular opportunities that encourage pupils to be active, improve their physical fitness, and develop teamwork and resilience. Through the effective use of the Sports Premium, we aim to foster a lifelong love of sport and physical activity, contributing to the overall well-being and personal development of every pupil.

Swimming at Howletch Lane
At Howletch Lane Primary School, we prioritise swimming and water safety as an essential part of our PE curriculum, ensuring it matches the breadth and ambition of the national curriculum. Our carefully sequenced swimming lessons are designed to build pupils’ confidence and competence in the water, with a focus on practising and refining key skills over time. We ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, receive tailored support to achieve ambitious outcomes in swimming and water safety. Through regular assessment and targeted teaching, we aim to equip every pupil with the vital knowledge and skills needed to be safe and confident swimmers.
We prioritise swimming proficiency by providing two dedicated lessons per week, ensuring that pupils in Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 have regular access to the pool throughout the academic year, with the goal of enabling them to swim 25 metres confidently by the end of their time in primary school.
In the academic year 24/25 our year 6 pupils achieved the following:
- 60% – Swim 25 metres unaided
- 60% – Perform a range of recognised strokes
- 60% – Perform a safe self rescue
