Approach to Phonics and Reading

 

We start teaching children to read by following the phonics based programme ‘Letters and Sounds’ to ensure that the children have the best possible start to reading. All of our books are organised according to ‘Letters and Sounds’ from Phase 1-6, enabling our children to have a degree of choice within a structured scheme.

Our pre-reading scheme is based on the Oxford Reading Tree after which the children work on Bug Club activities supplemented with books from the Ginn 360 scheme.

 

As the children develop their reading skills they move onto a colour coded scheme with Oxford Reading Tree and Ginn books at the core, supplemented with a wide variety of books from other sources. Once teachers are certain that children are confident readers the children will be moved onto ‘free readers’ where more responsibility for reading is placed upon the child.

 

Phonics and guided reading sessions take place everyday in school.

 

Children take home reading books each evening alongside reading record/review books. Parents are encouraged to hear children read every day and to comment in the books.
